🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Accord, the “taillight bulbs” are usually the outer bulbs in each rear lamp that handle the running light (tail) and brake light. Replacement is done from inside the trunk by opening the access covers and twisting the bulb sockets out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the lights.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot bulbs can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake light bulb (match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the shifter is in Park.
  • Open the trunk and use a flashlight so you can clearly see the bulb sockets.
  • Lay a towel down in the trunk to keep small parts from rolling away.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Have a helper press the brake pedal and turn on the parking lights while you look at the rear lamps.
  • If you’re working alone, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press/hold the trunk latch closed (don’t slam the trunk), then use the headlight switch to turn on parking lights and check the glow from behind. Re-open trunk before driving.

Step 2: Open the trunk access cover (left side)

  • On the left trunk liner behind the lamp area, find the small access door.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pry the access cover open.
  • If there’s a stubborn tab, use a small flat-blade screwdriver carefully to lift it.

Step 3: Remove the tail/brake bulb socket (left lamp)

  • Identify the correct socket by tracing where it sits behind the lamp.
  • Use your nitrile gloves, then rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it straight out by hand.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb (left lamp)

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (wiggle gently if tight).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers; keep nitrile gloves on.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and close the access cover (left side)

  • Insert the socket into the lamp housing and turn it clockwise until it locks by hand.
  • Snap the trunk access cover back into place (use the trim panel removal tool to align tabs if needed).

Step 6: Repeat on the right side

  • Use the flashlight to locate the right-side trunk access cover.
  • Repeat Steps 2 through 5 for the right taillight bulb.

Step 7: Function test

  • Turn on parking lights and confirm both sides glow evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights brighten.

âś… After Repair

  • Make sure both trunk access covers are fully clipped in and not rubbing any wiring.
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket again and re-seat the bulb firmly, then re-test.
