🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Ram is a straightforward job. You’ll remove each tail lamp housing, swap the bulbs, then reinstall and test the lights to make sure both sides work correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down before touching them.
  • Do not touch halogen bulb glass; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • If the truck has a trailer wiring connector or bed accessories near the lamp area, keep wires clear while removing the housing.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Turn the lights off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the truck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate so you can reach the tail lamp mounting screws.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the two tail lamp bolts.
  • Set the bolts aside safely.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp housing straight back

  • Gently wiggle the lamp housing and pull it straight rearward.
  • Do not pry hard on the lens.

Step 4: Release the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it from the housing.
  • If needed, use a trim panel tool lightly for a little extra help, but do not force it.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • If the bulb is a halogen style, use gloves and keep the glass clean.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Twist the socket back into the housing until it locks.
  • Align the lamp housing with the body and push it into place.
  • Reinstall the two 8mm bolts and snug them down.
  • Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same steps on the second taillight.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals to verify both bulbs work.
  • Check that the lamps sit flush with the body.
  • Make sure no warning message appears in the cluster.
