🔧 Tundra - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Tundra, the taillight bulbs are inside the rear lamp assemblies (one on each side). You’ll remove each lamp housing, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb.

Assumption: Your Tundra has replaceable incandescent taillight bulbs (not LED tail lamp assemblies).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves; bulbs can be hot and skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Pull the lamp straight back—don’t pry hard on the paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Trim clip tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/tail light bulb (7443) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate to access the taillamp mounting bolts.
  • Lay a clean towel near the corner so you can set the lamp down without scratching paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the driver-side taillight assembly

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to remove the two taillamp bolts on the inside edge of the lamp (visible with the tailgate open).
  • Grab the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins (the pins are alignment pegs that pop out of rubber grommets).
  • Wiggle gently—don’t pry on the lens.

Step 2: Remove the stop/tail bulb socket

  • Behind the lamp, locate the stop/tail bulb socket (usually the larger dual-filament bulb socket).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • If it’s tight, use a trim clip tool gently as a lever on the socket tabs (don’t crack the housing).

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a wedge-base bulb—no twisting).
  • Push the new 7443 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the glass).

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and lamp (driver side)

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the locating pins with the body grommets and press the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two bolts using the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lb).

Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 1–4 on the passenger-side taillight using the same 10mm socket and procedure.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and confirm both taillights glow evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have someone help) and confirm both brake lights get brighter.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and reseat the bulb firmly.
  • If your Tundra has LED tail lamps and no bulb socket exists, the full lamp assembly is serviced instead of a bulb.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
