🔧 Malibu - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear taillight bulbs by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the trunk, then swapping the bulbs on both left and right sides. This restores your running lights/brake lights (and sometimes turn signal, depending on bulb position) so other drivers can see you clearly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for 5-10 minutes; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the bulb glass (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the taillamp when loosening fasteners so it doesn’t fall and crack.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Flashlight
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (match the bulb number printed on your old bulb, commonly 7443) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Find the access area behind each taillamp inside the trunk (you’ll pull back the trunk liner).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillamp area inside the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk liner behind the taillight (left side first).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop out any liner retainers, then pull the liner back enough to reach the bulb socket(s).
- Work slowly to avoid breaking liner clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Identify the taillight bulb socket you’re replacing (usually the larger socket for stop/tail).
- Grip the socket firmly, then turn it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it straight out.
- Trim tool definition: A plastic pry tool that removes clips without scratching.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if it’s tight).
- Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb, then push the new bulb in fully.
- Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not the bulb glass).
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the taillamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Move to the right side trunk liner.
- Repeat Steps 1-4 to replace the bulb on the other taillight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
Step 6: If you removed taillamp nuts (only if needed)
- If your liner access is tight and you choose to remove the taillamp assembly: use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the lamp straight back to release the alignment pins.
- When reinstalling nuts, use a torque wrench (inch-pound) and Torque to 35 in-lb (4 N·m).
✅ After Repair
- Test the lights: turn on parking lights, press the brake pedal, and try hazards/turn signals.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and rotate/reseat it, then re-check.
- Reinstall the trunk liner and any clips you removed.
