🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Assumption: your RAV4 uses replaceable rear lamp bulbs, not the factory LED-only tail lamp assembly. This job is straightforward and usually takes just a few minutes per side. The main goal is to remove the rear lamp access panel, swap the burned-out bulbs, and reinstall everything cleanly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If your RAV4 has LED rear lamps, the bulb may not be serviceable and the lamp assembly may need replacement instead.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Replacement bulbs

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail light bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the liftgate for rear lamp access.
  • If the rear lamp is LED-only, stop here and replace the lamp assembly instead.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Use your hand or a trim panel tool to remove the rear lamp access cover on the inside of the cargo area.
  • Keep the cover in a safe place.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Use your hand to twist the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull it out of the lamp housing.
  • If it is tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Do not force it.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the burned-out bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Use gloves while handling the new bulb.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder

  • Align the bulb holder with the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise by hand until snug.
  • Make sure it seats fully to keep moisture out.

Step 5: Test the light

  • Turn the lights on and confirm both rear bulbs work.
  • Check brake lights and turn signals if applicable to the bulb you replaced.
  • If one side still does not work, recheck bulb seating and connector alignment.

✅ After Repair

  • Close the access cover firmly.
  • Make sure the bulb holder is locked in place.
  • Check for warning lights on the dash.
  • Walk behind the vehicle and confirm both rear lights match in brightness.
