🔧 Tacoma - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Tacoma is a simple beginner-friendly repair. You’ll remove the rear lamp assemblies, twist out the bulb sockets, replace the bulbs, and test all rear lighting before driving.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or handle new bulbs by the plastic base to avoid getting skin oil on the glass.
- ⚠️ Do not pull hard on the wiring harness. The lamp assembly only needs to come out far enough to access the bulb sockets.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail/stop light bulbs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tacoma on level ground.
- Move the shifter to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn all lights off.
- Open the tailgate to access the taillight mounting bolts.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the taillight housing and connects the bulb to the wiring.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Tailgate
- Lower the tailgate fully so you can see the two bolts on the inside edge of each taillight assembly.
- Use safety glasses before working around the rear lamp area.
Step 2: Remove the First Taillight Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two mounting bolts from the taillight assembly.
- Place the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- Tip: A small cup works great.
Step 3: Pull the Taillight Assembly Straight Back
- Use both hands to gently pull the taillight assembly straight rearward from the truck.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool gently at the outer edge to help release the alignment pins.
- Do not pry with a screwdriver. It can crack the lens or scratch the paint.
- Tip: Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the Tail/Stop Bulb Socket
- Find the tail/stop bulb socket in the taillight housing. It is typically the larger socket for the red rear light.
- Use your hand with nitrile gloves to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
Step 5: Replace the Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear tail/stop light bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Do not force the bulb. If it does not slide in smoothly, check that it is lined up correctly.
Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the socket sits flat so moisture cannot enter the lamp.
Step 7: Reinstall the Taillight Assembly
- Line up the taillight alignment pins with the body openings.
- Push the assembly straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the two mounting bolts.
- Tighten the bolts snugly by hand with the ratchet. Do not overtighten because the lamp housing is plastic.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
- Move to the opposite taillight assembly.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two mounting bolts.
- Pull the taillight straight back, remove the tail/stop bulb socket, replace the bulb, and reinstall the assembly the same way.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 9: Test the Rear Lights
- Turn the parking lights on and confirm both taillights glow.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights brighten.
- If working alone, use a heavy object carefully against the brake pedal or look for the reflection on a wall or garage door.
- Also test turn signals and reverse lights to make sure no socket was disturbed.
✅ After Repair
- Close the tailgate and check that both taillight assemblies sit flush.
- Confirm both rear tail/stop light bulbs work in parking light and brake light modes.
- If a new bulb does not work, remove it and check that it is fully seated in the socket.
- If the bulb still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or melted plastic.
