🔧 Taillight Bulb Replacement - Replacement
This job replaces the rear stop/tail bulbs on both sides of your Sierra. The taillamp housings come off from the outside, so you do not need to remove the bed or trim panels.

- Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- If the rear lamps were on recently, wait a few minutes so the bulbs cool.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the tailgate
- Lower the tailgate for access to the taillamp mounting screws.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws
- Use a 7mm socket with a ratchet and short extension to remove the two screws holding each taillamp housing.
- Keep the screws in a safe place.
Step 3: Release the taillamp housing
- Pull the taillamp housing straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- If it sticks, use a trim tool to gently work it loose.
- Do not pry on the lens edge.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Twist the rear bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Install the new bulb into the socket.
- Make sure it seats fully and matches the old bulb style.
- Handle the bulb by the base.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and housing
- Insert the socket into the taillamp housing and twist clockwise to lock it in place.
- Align the housing pins with the body openings and press it straight in.
- Reinstall the screws with the 7mm socket and tighten to 3 N·m (27 in-lbs).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same process for the opposite taillamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on the parking lights and check both taillights.
- Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lamps work.
- Check the turn signals and hazard lights if those bulbs were part of the rear lamp assembly.
- Make sure the housings sit flush with the body.
