🔧 Focus - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Focus, the taillight bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk by removing the taillamp assembly and swapping the bulb(s) in the socket(s). You’ll do the same process on both left and right sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool—hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillamp as you remove it so you don’t scratch paint or break the alignment pins.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulbs - Replace in pairs (left & right) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Set out a towel or soft cloth to rest the taillamp on after removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the taillamp fasteners

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the trunk liner near the taillamp area.
  • If there’s a small access cover, remove it by hand; if the liner needs to flex, gently pry clips with a plastic trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without damaging them).

Step 2: Remove the taillamp retaining nuts

  • Use an 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two nuts holding the taillamp to the body.
  • Put the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk.

Step 3: Remove the taillamp assembly

  • From outside the car, hold the taillamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back—don’t pry against the painted body.
  • Tip: Pull straight back to protect the locating pins.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • On the back of the taillamp, find the bulb socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • If you’re replacing “both taillight bulbs” (left and right main bulbs), repeat this for the main bulb socket on each side.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves to avoid getting oil on the bulb.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and press the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
  • Tip: Match the new bulb to the old one.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket(s)

  • Insert the socket back into the taillamp and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 7: Reinstall the taillamp assembly

  • Align the taillamp’s locating pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the nuts using the 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs)

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same steps for the opposite taillamp so both sides are replaced as a pair.

âś… After Repair

  • Test all rear lighting: parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then re-lock the socket fully.
  • Make sure the taillamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
