🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Accord, the taillight bulbs are serviced from inside the trunk. You’ll pull back the trunk liner, twist out the bulb socket (the plastic holder the bulb sits in), swap the bulb, and test the lights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot right after use.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass on halogen bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight/brake light bulbs (dual-filament) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Turn signal bulbs (amber) - Qty: 2 If you’re replacing turn bulbs

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can access the trunk side liners.
  • If you’re not sure which bulb is out, turn on parking lights and hazards to identify the failed side/function.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the bulb you’re replacing

  • Turn the lights on to confirm the failure: parking lights for tail lamps, brake pedal for brake lamps, hazards for turn signals.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the lens and verify which side is out.
  • If one side is out, replace both.

Step 2: Access the taillight bulb area from inside the trunk

  • Open the trunk and go to the side you’re working on.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pop any plastic clips holding the trunk side liner (if equipped).
  • If your liner has screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Pull the trunk liner back to expose the rear of the taillight assembly and bulb sockets.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Find the correct bulb socket (plastic base with wiring plugged into it).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t force it—wiggle gently if needed.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Test the light function before reinstalling the trunk liner:
    • Tail light: turn on parking lights.
    • Brake light: press the brake pedal (use a helper or place a sturdy object on the pedal carefully).
    • Turn signal: turn on hazards.

Step 6: Reinstall the trunk liner

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Reinstall any screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Reinstall any clips by pressing them in by hand (use a plastic trim removal tool set to align as needed).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–6 on the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify all rear lighting works: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards.
  • Make sure the trunk liner is secured and not rubbing any wiring.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the socket may be corroded or there may be a fuse/wiring issue.
