🔧 Corolla - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Corolla, the rear “taillight area” can mean a few different bulbs (tail/brake, turn signal, or reverse). The good news: the most common ones are accessed from inside the trunk and are a quick twist-out replacement.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool down; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you must check lights, keep hands clear of moving parts and have a helper.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake bulb (7443) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440) - Qty: 2
  • Reverse light bulb (921) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing

  • Use a helper and turn on lights one function at a time: parking lights (tail), brake pedal (brake), turn signal (amber blink), and reverse (white).
  • Use flashlight to identify which section is out on each side.
  • Most common is the 7443 tail/brake bulb.

Step 2: Open the trunk and access the bulb area

  • Behind each rear lamp, find the trunk lining access door/cover.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to pop the cover open.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to lift the clip center, then remove it.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the socket that matches the failed light function (tail/brake/turn/reverse).
  • Grasp the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves (keeps skin oils off the bulb).
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight in firmly until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the housing in the same orientation.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Test the light function (tail/brake/turn/reverse) before closing the access cover.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the matching bulb on the other rear lamp (recommended so brightness matches).
  • Reinstall both trunk access covers and any clips you removed.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right tail lights are equally bright with parking lights ON.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights brighten.
  • Confirm turn signals blink at a normal speed (fast-blink usually means a bulb is still out).
  • If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and rotate/re-seat it to ensure good contact.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
