🔧 Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the rear “taillight” bulbs are inside the taillamp housings on the left and right sides. You’ll remove each taillamp from the outside edge (with the liftgate open), swap the bulb(s), and reinstall the lamp so it seals against water.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
- ⚠️ Support the taillamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t drop and crack.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Torx T25 screwdriver
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb - Replace in pairs (left + right) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate so you can access the taillamp screws on each side.
- Have your replacement bulbs ready, and match them to the old bulb (same shape and locking tabs).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing
- Turn the lights ON briefly and check what’s out: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light.
- Turn the lights back OFF before disassembly.
- Tip: Ask someone to press the brake pedal.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp retaining screws
- With the liftgate open, locate the two screws on the inside edge of the taillamp (visible in the liftgate opening).
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver if the screw has a cross head, or a Torx T25 screwdriver if it has a star head.
- Place the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.
Step 3: Pull the taillamp assembly out
- Hold the taillamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool very gently at the edge to start it moving.
- Do not pry hard; the housing uses alignment pins that can crack if forced.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Behind the taillamp, find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (the sockets twist-lock into the housing).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- If you need better visibility, use a small flashlight.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some styles require a slight twist; if it doesn’t pull easily, try twisting gently).
- Install the new bulb using nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Before reinstalling the lamp, turn the lights ON and verify the bulb works (tail/brake/turn as applicable).
- Turn the lights back OFF.
Step 7: Reinstall the taillamp assembly
- Align the taillamp’s locating pins with the body grommets and press the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two retaining screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver (whichever fits your screws).
- Tighten the screws snug by hand; do not overtighten (plastic housing).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–7 for the other taillamp to replace the bulb on that side.
- Tip: Replacing bulbs in pairs helps brightness match.
âś… After Repair
- Verify tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights all work.
- Confirm both taillamps sit flush to the body (helps prevent water leaks).
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-check the socket lock-in and that the bulb is fully seated.
