🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replace the left and right rear taillight bulbs one side at a time. On your Grand Cherokee, the rear lamp housing is accessed from inside the cargo area, and the bulb sockets twist out from the back of the lamp assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass on new halogen bulbs with bare fingers.
  • If your rear lamp is LED and does not have removable bulbs, the lamp assembly must be replaced instead.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access to the lamp area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the cargo area access

  • Open the liftgate and move any cargo away from the side you are working on.
  • Use a flashlight to find the rear access panel behind the taillight area.

Step 2: Remove the access cover

  • Use a trim panel tool to gently release the rear lamp access cover.
  • Set the cover aside so it does not get bent or scratched.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Use your hand to twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  • Do not force it.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new rear taillight bulb by pressing it into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket clockwise until it locks in place.

Step 6: Test the light

  • Turn on the parking lights and check the repaired taillight.
  • Have a helper confirm both sides work if possible.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove the socket and check the bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both taillights, brake lights, and turn signals.
  • Make sure the access cover is fully snapped back into place.
  • Verify there is no moisture or loose wiring around the lamp housing.
