Assumption: This covers the left and right rear taillight bulbs on your Ram, and the lamp housings are the standard screw-retained style.

🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs is a quick job. You’ll remove each lamp housing, swap the old bulbs for new ones, and reinstall everything carefully so the seals stay dry.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool first if the lights were just on; hot bulbs can burn skin.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Finger oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Be gentle with the lamp housing and connector tabs so you do not crack the lens.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Trim removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift into Park and turn the lighting switch fully off.
  • Open the tailgate for access to the taillight fasteners.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the taillight fasteners

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the taillight mounting screws.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place.

Step 2: Free the taillight housing

  • Use your hand to pull the taillight housing straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool very gently at the edge.
  • Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to release it from the housing.
  • Remove the socket from the lamp assembly.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb firmly into the socket.
  • Use gloves so you do not touch the bulb glass.

Step 5: Reinstall the taillight housing

  • Put the socket back into the lamp housing and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Align the housing with the body openings and press it straight in.
  • Reinstall the mounting screws with the Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Torque to snug only; do not overtighten and crack the lens.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same bulb replacement on the opposite taillight.
  • Make sure both housings sit flush against the body.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights on and verify both rear taillights work.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights illuminate.
  • Activate the turn signals and hazard lights to check both sides.
  • If one side does not light up, recheck the bulb orientation and socket lock.
