🔧 Outback - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each rear lamp housing from inside the cargo area, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb. This is usually needed when one or both rear tail/brake lights are out, dim, or intermittent.

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the rear hatch and remove any cargo near the side trim panels.
• Have your replacement bulbs ready, and compare them to the old ones before installing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight mounting nuts (left side)

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use a flashlight to locate the access cover behind the left rear lamp area (inside the cargo area).
• Remove the access cover by releasing the clips with a trim clip removal tool or small flathead screwdriver.
• Tip: Work slowly to avoid breaking plastic clips.

Step 2: Remove the left taillight assembly

• Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the two 10mm nuts holding the lamp.
• From outside the vehicle, hold the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
• Set the lamp on a soft surface so you don’t scratch the paint.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket and replace the bulb

• Find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (tail/brake is typically the larger dual-filament bulb socket in the rear combination lamp).
• Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
• Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
• Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
• Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 4: Quick test before reassembly

• Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
• Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine) and turn on the parking lights to check the tail light.
• Press the brake pedal (use a helper) to confirm the brake light works.
• Turn ignition OFF again.

Step 5: Reinstall the left taillight assembly

• Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body holes and press the lamp straight in by hand.
• Install the two nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
• Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
• Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place.

Step 6: Repeat on the right side

• Repeat Steps 1-5 on the right rear lamp using the same tools.
• Replace the bulb with the same matching type as the left side.

✅ After Repair

• Verify: tail lights ON, brake lights bright, no flicker when you tap the lamp lightly.
• If a new bulb doesn’t work, re-check the socket is fully twisted/locked and the bulb is fully seated.
• Make sure the access covers are snapped back in so cargo doesn’t catch them.
