🔧 Soul - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Soul, the rear lamp uses separate bulbs for different functions (tail/brake, turn signal, and reverse). The removal process is similar on both sides, but the exact bulb type depends on which function you’re replacing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🔸 Let bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can be hot.
  • 🔸 Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten some bulb life.
  • 🔸 Do not force the lamp housing—plastic locating pins can crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake bulb - Replace in pairs (left + right) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs (left + right) - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse bulb - Replace in pairs (left + right) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch for access and lighting.
  • Identify which bulb you’re replacing: tail/brake, turn, or reverse.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you mean

  • Have a helper press the brake, turn signals on, and shift to reverse (engine ON, foot on brake).
  • Watch which light is out: tail/brake (red), turn (amber/red depending on lamp), or reverse (white).
  • Tell me which function is out.

Step 2: Remove the rear lamp access fasteners (one side)

  • Open the hatch and locate the rear lamp mounting area at the body edge.
  • Use a flashlight to find the lamp mounting nuts/fasteners.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the lamp mounting nuts.
  • Torque: I’ll provide the exact torque once you confirm which rear lamp assembly style you have (photo helps).

Step 3: Pull the lamp housing straight back

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull straight rearward from the body.
  • If it’s stuck, use a trim panel removal tool very gently to start it moving.
  • Do not pry hard—pins can break.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the correct bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • If access is tight, use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the right socket.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and push the new bulb straight in.
  • Before reassembly, test the bulb function (brake/turn/reverse) to confirm it works.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket and twist clockwise until it locks by hand.
  • Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to reinstall the nuts.
  • Torque: I’ll give the exact spec once you confirm your lamp style (or share a photo of the rear lamp with the hatch open).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–6 for the opposite taillight.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so color/brightness matches left-to-right.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights all work.
  • Make sure the lamp sits flush to the body with even gaps.
  • Confirm no warning indicators appear on the dash.
