🔧 Tucson - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Tucson, the rear light units may use either replaceable bulbs (twist-out sockets) or sealed LED modules (whole lamp gets replaced). I’ll walk you through how to access the rear lamp, remove the bulb socket, and install new bulbs without breaking the tabs or pinching wiring.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oil can shorten some bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support trim panels while prying to avoid cracking clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 1/4" torque wrench (Nm scale)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb (match the bulb number printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access and remove cargo as needed.
  • If you’re unsure which bulb you need, plan to remove one bulb first and read the number printed on its base.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing

  • Turn the lights on (parking lights) and walk behind your Tucson to see which section is out.
  • Have a helper press the brake pedal to confirm the brake light.
  • Turn on the hazard flashers to confirm the turn signal.
  • Use a flashlight to look closely: if you see a twist-out socket on the back of the lamp, it’s a replaceable bulb; if it’s a sealed housing with no socket, it’s typically an LED module.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp bulb service area (left and right)

  • With the liftgate open, locate the access area behind each outer rear lamp in the cargo-side trim.
  • Use a trim removal tool set to gently pop the small access cover/door (if equipped).
  • If your trim uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Tip: Pry close to clips, not the panel edge.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket (bulb-style lamps)

  • Locate the correct bulb socket on the back of the lamp (you may see multiple).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip and pull straight (don’t yank on wires).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb (same type/number as the old one).
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the glass), if equipped.

Step 5: Reinstall the bulb socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Rotate clockwise by hand until it fully locks.
  • Make sure the socket flange sits flat and the seal isn’t pinched.

Step 6: If your Tucson has a sealed LED taillight (no bulb socket)

  • If there is no twist-out socket and the light is LED, the usual fix is replacing the lamp assembly.
  • From inside the cargo area, remove the trim access to reach lamp fasteners using a trim removal tool set and Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Remove lamp retaining nuts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Reinstall nuts and Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 7: Refit access covers and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall any access covers or trim pieces you removed (press clips in by hand).
  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other taillight.

âś… After Repair

  • Test parking lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • Verify both sides match in brightness and color.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and socket corrosion.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)
