šŸ”§ Tucson - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Tucson, most rear bulbs are accessed by removing the outer taillight housing (the lamp on the body, not the liftgate). Then you twist out the bulb sockets and swap the bulbs.

Quick check: Which bulbs are you replacing—brake/turn, tail/running, or reverse? (If you’re not sure, tell me which function is out and I’ll map it.)

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool first; hot bulbs can burn you.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves and avoid touching glass bulbs with bare fingers.
  • āš ļø Support the taillight housing with your hand so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs (match type to the bulb you remove) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the taillight fasteners.
  • Take a photo before unplugging anything.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the outer taillight fasteners (one side)

  • Open the liftgate and locate the taillight screws along the inside edge of the taillight.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or 10mm socket if equipped) to remove the taillight mounting fasteners.

Step 2: Pull the taillight housing off the body

  • Grip the taillight housing with both hands.
  • Pull straight rearward to release the locating pins (they’re like alignment pegs that pop out of grommets).
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic) gently at the edge and work slowly.
  • Pull straight back—don’t pry hard sideways.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
  • If your Tucson has multiple sockets, remove the one for the bulb you’re replacing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the bulb from the socket:
    • If it’s a push-in type, pull it straight out.
    • If it’s a twist-lock type, rotate it and lift it out.
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the housing and turn clockwise to lock.
  • Before reinstalling the housing, turn the lights on and test the function:
    • Tail/running lights
    • Brake lights (have someone press the pedal)
    • Turn signal / hazards
    • Reverse lights (key on, foot on brake, shift to R)

Step 6: Reinstall the taillight housing

  • Line up the locating pins with the body grommets.
  • Press the taillight housing straight in until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the mounting fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs)

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-6 for the other taillight so both bulbs are replaced.

Step 8: If your bulb is on the liftgate (inner lamp)

  • If the burned-out bulb is in the liftgate-mounted lamp, tell me which function is out and I’ll give you the exact liftgate lamp removal steps for your Tucson.

āœ… After Repair

  • Verify all rear lighting functions again: tail, brake, turn, hazards, reverse.
  • Check that both taillight housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
  • Watch for moisture inside the lens over the next day; that can mean the seal isn’t seated.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,000-₹3,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹300-₹1,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹700-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary in Panipat, but this is usually a 0.5-1.0 hour job.
