🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

This job replaces the rear taillight bulbs on both sides of your GTI. On this car, the bulbs are accessed from inside the rear hatch area and/or rear lamp carrier, depending on which rear bulb you are changing. Assumption: factory bulb-style rear lamps, not full LED units.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lighting switch off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool completely before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass of a new halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If a bulb is stuck, do not force the socket or lamp housing.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Replacement bulb socket seals - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the exterior lights off and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • Open the hatch for rear lamp access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hatch and access the rear lamp area

  • Open the rear hatch.
  • Use a trim removal tool to gently remove the small access cover or cargo trim panel near the rear lamp area, if equipped.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the bulb socket or lamp carrier.

Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket

  • Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver to release the bulb socket lock, if needed.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  • Pull straight; do not pry hard.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb of the same type into the socket.
  • If the bulb uses a twist-lock base, make sure it seats fully.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Push the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • If there is a retaining screw, use a Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall it and torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs).

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the other taillight bulb.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test the taillights, brake lights, and turn signals.
  • Check both sides from behind the car to confirm even brightness.
  • If a warning light stays on, recheck that each bulb is fully seated.
