🔧 Golf - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Golf, the “taillight bulbs” can mean different bulbs (tail/running, brake, turn signal, reverse). The basic job is to access the rear lamp housings, remove the bulb holder, swap the bulbs, then test all light functions.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and switch lights OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a bulb with bare fingers.
- ⚠️ Support the lamp so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hatch and remove any cargo so you can reach the rear side trim.
- Take a quick photo of bulb positions.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing
- Turn the light switch to parking lights and see which bulb is out (this is usually the “tail/running” light).
- If you mean brake or turn signal, have a helper press the brake pedal or use the hazards to identify the correct side.
- Use a flashlight to look through the lens and confirm which section is dark.
Step 2: Access the outer taillight (body-mounted) fastener
- In the cargo area, go to the side of the bulb you’re replacing.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to open/remove the small access cover in the side trim panel (if equipped).
- Use a flashlight to locate the taillight retaining nut behind the trim.
Step 3: Remove the outer taillight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and extension (3"-6") to remove the retaining nut.
- With one hand on the lamp outside, gently pull the taillight straight rearward to release it from the locating pins.
- Unplug the electrical connector from the lamp (press the lock tab and pull straight off).
Step 4: Remove the bulb holder and replace the bulb
- On the back of the taillight, remove the bulb holder (it typically twists to unlock).
- Remove the old bulb from the holder and install the new bulb in the same position.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (do not smear it on the bulb glass).
- Match bulb position exactly—don’t mix sockets.
Step 5: Reinstall the taillight
- Reinstall the bulb holder into the lamp and lock it in place.
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
- Line up the locating pins and gently push the taillight into place so it sits flush.
- Reinstall the retaining nut using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (inch-pound capable): Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover using a trim removal tool (plastic).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the opposite taillight so both bulbs are replaced.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on parking lights and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- Test brake lights, turn signals, and hazards to make sure nothing else was disturbed.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-seat the connector and confirm the bulb is fully locked in the holder.
