🔧 SRX - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear taillight assembly, swap the bulb(s), and reinstall the lamp. This is a straightforward job, but the lamp housings can crack if you pry in the wrong spot, so go slow and pull straight back.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and make sure all exterior lights are OFF before touching bulbs.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn your fingers.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Pull the taillight straight back—don’t pry hard against painted surfaces.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb (match the bulb type from the old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate for access to the cargo-area side panels.
- Lay a towel near the lamp area to protect paint (optional).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners (one side)
- Open the liftgate and go to the same side you’re replacing first.
- Use a flashlight to find the small access cover/trim panel in the cargo-area side trim behind the taillight.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop the access cover open.
Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the taillight retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with your free hand so it doesn’t drop when the last nut comes off.
- With the nuts removed, hold the lamp at the outer edge and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- Wiggle gently; don’t pry hard.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket and replace the bulb
- Find the bulb socket for the taillight function and turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it. (A “bulb socket” is the plastic holder that twists into the lamp housing.)
- Put on nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
Step 4: Reinstall the taillight assembly
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body and push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the retaining nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to snug the nuts evenly: Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place by hand.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the opposite taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
- Verify both lamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove it and reseat it firmly, then recheck.
