This job replaces the rear taillight bulbs by removing each rear lamp housing, swapping the bulb(s), then reinstalling the lamp. On your Equinox, the outer rear lamp assemblies are held in with nuts accessed when the liftgate is open.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate for access to the rear lamp mounting nuts.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Look at the inboard edge of the taillight (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
- Remove any small access covers using a trim panel tool.
Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two mounting nuts.
- Hold the lamp with your other hand as the last nut comes off.
- Pull the taillight straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- Tip: Wiggle gently; don’t pry against paint.
Step 3: Remove and replace the bulb
- Locate the stop/tail bulb socket (usually the larger socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp.
- Pull the old bulb straight out using nitrile gloves.
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
Step 4: Reinstall the bulb socket and taillight assembly
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the locating pins and push the taillight into place.
- Install the two nuts by hand first, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
- If using a torque wrench, tighten the lamp nuts to Torque to 3 N·m (27 in-lbs).
- Reinstall any access covers using a trim panel tool.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-4 for the other rear taillight.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the lights ON and confirm both taillights illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights work.
- Confirm the lamp housings sit flush and don’t wobble.
