🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Altima, the rear bulbs are serviced from inside the trunk. You’ll open the trunk side access panels, twist the bulb sockets out, and replace the bulbs on both left and right sides.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the car before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ No high-voltage hybrid components are involved in this trunk-area job; do not remove orange cables anywhere.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
- Small flathead screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail light bulb (commonly 3157 type) - Qty: 2
- Rear turn signal bulb (commonly 7440 type) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
- Open the trunk and set a flashlight nearby.
- If you’re unsure which bulb is out, have a helper press the brake pedal and turn on the hazard lights before you start removing anything (then turn the car OFF again).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left taillight bulb sockets
- Open the trunk.
- On the left trunk side, pull back the carpet/trim access area behind the taillight.
- If there are plastic push-clips holding the liner, use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to pop them out.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (go slow to avoid breaking it).
Step 2: Identify the correct bulb socket
- Look at the back of the taillight assembly; you’ll see 1-3 twist-in bulb sockets.
- Use a flashlight to see clearly.
- The larger dual-filament bulb is usually the stop/tail (running light + brake light). The separate bulb is often the turn signal.
- If unsure, pull one socket at a time.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and twist it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Use nitrile gloves to avoid getting skin oil on the bulb.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the housing.
- Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place (snug by hand).
- Turn the car ON and test:
- Running lights (headlights ON)
- Brake lights (press brake)
- Turn signal / hazards
- Turn the car OFF again after confirming it works.
Step 6: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right trunk side access area.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) and flashlight the same way.
- Repeat Steps 2-5 for the right taillight.
Step 7: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner/carpet.
- Reinstall any clips by pressing them back in by hand (use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to align if needed).
✅ After Repair
- Do a final full test: running lights, brakes, hazards, left/right turn signals.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove that socket and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
- If the bulb and seating are good, the next checks are the fuse and the socket contacts (corrosion/burnt pins).
