🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replace both rear tail bulbs at the same time so light output matches on both sides. On your Corolla, the bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk by removing the rear lamp access covers and twisting the bulb sockets out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down first; they can be hot after use.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Use care when prying trim covers so you do not crack the trunk liner.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs (7443) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk fully and clear out the side storage area for access.
  • Keep the new bulbs nearby before removing the old ones.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the rear lamp area

  • Use a flashlight to locate the access covers on the inside of each trunk side panel.
  • On both sides, the bulb sockets sit behind the rear lamp assembly.
  • Work gently to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the access cover

  • Use a trim panel tool or flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the trunk liner access cover.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get bent.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach into the opening and locate the taillight bulb socket.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
  • The socket is the small plastic holder the bulb fits into.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
  • Install the new 7443 bulb into the socket by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Do not force it; the bulb only fits one way.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
  • Make sure it seats fully.

Step 6: Test the new bulbs

  • Turn the parking lights on and check both taillights.
  • If your bulbs are dual-function tail/brake bulbs, press the brake pedal and confirm bright output on both sides.
  • If one does not work, remove the socket again and check bulb seating.

Step 7: Reinstall the access covers

  • Use your hands to press the trunk liner cover back into place.
  • Make sure the panel sits flush and the clips are secure.

✅ After Repair

  • Walk behind the vehicle and confirm both taillights are illuminated evenly.
  • Check brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights while you are there.
  • Keep the old bulbs as a backup if they still have a useful filament for emergency use.
