🔧 Legacy - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Legacy, the taillight bulbs are serviced from inside the trunk by removing the small access covers behind each lamp. You’ll twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything and confirm all light functions work.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If bulbs were on recently, let them cool (hot glass can burn you).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers.
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk lid so it can’t drop while you work.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb (outer lamp, match OEM type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear brake/taillight bulb (outer lamp, match OEM type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (outer lamp, match OEM type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out the side areas so you can reach the access covers.
  • Identify which bulbs you’re replacing: tail/brake/turn are typically in the outer lamp; reverse is often in the trunk lid lamp.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and locate the taillight access covers

  • Use a flashlight to look behind each taillight area inside the trunk.
  • Use a plastic trim tool (a non-scratch pry tool) to lift the edge of the small access door/cover in the trunk liner.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket for the light you’re replacing

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach through the access opening and find the bulb socket (it has wires going to it).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Tip: Turn gently—don’t force plastic parts.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help pry at the base (avoid cracking the socket).
  • Compare the old bulb to the new bulb (same shape/locking tabs). Match the bulb type exactly.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket using your gloved hand until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease (optional) to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and close the access cover

  • Insert the socket back into the housing, align the tabs, and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reinstall the trunk liner access cover. Use the plastic trim tool to press it back flush if needed.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON (engine can stay OFF) and test: parking lights, brake lights, left/right turn signals, and hazards.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked in place.
  • Make sure the access covers are fully closed to keep moisture out of the trunk.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹500-₹1,500 (parts + labor)
