🔧 Enclave - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Enclave, the “taillight bulbs” can mean different bulbs (turn signal, reverse light, brake/park light) and they can be located either in the body-side lamp (on the quarter panel) or the liftgate lamp. The physical removal is similar, but the bulb type and socket location can differ—and some lamps may be LED and not bulb-serviceable.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass on halogen bulbs; skin oil shortens bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Clean nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear lamp bulb(s) (match the bulb number from the old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Open the liftgate for better access and lighting.
- Turn on the specific light function you’re fixing (park, brake, turn, reverse) and confirm which side is out, then turn everything OFF before disassembly.
- If you’re not sure which bulb to buy: remove one bulb first, read the number stamped on its base, then purchase two matching bulbs. Replace matching bulbs in pairs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which rear lamp section has the failed bulb
- Use a small flashlight and look at the rear lamps with the liftgate open.
- Body-side lamp = fixed to the quarter panel (does not move with liftgate).
- Liftgate lamp = mounted on the liftgate and moves when you open/close it.
Step 2: Access the body-side (quarter panel) taillamp fasteners
- Locate the access area at the inner edge of the body-side taillamp (near where the liftgate closes).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop off the small trim cover (if equipped) to expose the taillamp retaining nuts/fasteners.
Step 3: Remove the body-side taillamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with your free hand so it doesn’t fall or scratch paint.
- Pull the taillamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips. Pull straight back, don’t pry paint.
- Disconnect the lamp electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it off by hand (do not yank the wires).
Step 4: Replace the bulb(s) in the body-side lamp
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the lamp housing.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb (same type/number as removed).
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal if it looks dry (avoid getting grease on the bulb glass).
- Reinstall the bulb socket by inserting and turning clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Reinstall the body-side taillamp assembly
- Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
- Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body holes, then press the lamp in evenly.
- Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
- Reinstall any trim cover using the plastic trim removal tool (press it back into place by hand).
Step 6: If your failed bulb is in the liftgate lamp, access the liftgate lamp fasteners
- With the liftgate open, locate the inner edge of the liftgate-mounted lamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to remove any small access cover(s) that hide the retaining nuts/fasteners.
Step 7: Remove the liftgate lamp assembly and replace its bulb(s)
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the retaining nuts.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locator pin(s).
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling by hand.
- Remove the bulb socket by turning it counterclockwise by hand, swap the bulb, then reinstall the socket clockwise until locked.
- Reinstall the lamp, reinstall nuts, and torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side (replace bulbs in pairs)
- Use the same steps for the opposite lamp.
- Pairs help match brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Test all rear lighting: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and confirm it’s fully seated and the socket is locked.
- If the lamp section is LED and there is no removable socket/bulb, the LED board is typically part of the lamp assembly (lamp replacement required).
