🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the rear taillight bulbs on both sides by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the trunk. This restores your running lights and brake lights so you stay visible and legal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You’re replacing the outer stop/tail (dual‑filament) bulbs on left and right. If your bulb/socket looks different, stop and match the bulb to what you removed.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car off, remove the key, and let bulbs cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic trim in the trunk; it can crack in cold weather.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb (stop/tail, dual‑filament) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you have room to work.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can clearly see the bulb socket area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (left side)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the access area behind the left taillight inside the trunk.
  • Remove the trunk side trim access cover (if equipped) using a plastic trim removal tool. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching.)
  • If there are retaining clips/screws in the way, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

  • Identify the stop/tail bulb socket (usually the larger, dual-wire socket).
  • Grip the socket and turn it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If it feels loose, re-seat it firmly.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and quick test

  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Do a quick check: turn the headlights on (running lights), then press the brake pedal (have a helper press it, or back up near a wall and watch the reflection).

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

  • Repeat Steps 1–4 on the right taillight using the same plastic trim removal tool, Phillips screwdriver #2, and flashlight.

Step 6 (Only if you had to loosen/remove the lamp): Re-secure lamp fasteners

  • If you removed any taillight retaining nuts, reinstall and tighten them evenly using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Torque to 7 N·m (5 ft-lbs)
  • Do not overtighten; studs can break.

âś… After Repair

  • âś… Verify all rear lighting functions: running lights, brake lights, and hazard flashers.
  • Reinstall any trunk trim covers, clips, and carpeting you removed.
  • If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and rotate/re-seat it, then check the socket for corrosion.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
