šŸ”§ Camry - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Camry, the ā€œtaillightā€ area can mean the rear outer bulbs (tail/running + brake, and turn signal). Replacing them is done from inside the trunk, then twisting the bulb socket out and swapping the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool; they can burn your fingers.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life); use gloves.
  • āš ļø Support the taillamp as you remove it so it doesn’t drop or scratch paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake bulb (dual-filament) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • 🧰 Turn the light switch to OFF.
  • 🧰 Lay a towel on the bumper edge under the lamp area to prevent scratches.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which ā€œtaillight bulbā€ you’re replacing

  • Use the flashlight and look at the rear lamp area.
  • If you mean the red light that’s on at night + gets brighter when braking, that’s the tail/brake bulb (one per side).
  • If you mean the blinking rear light, that’s the turn signal bulb (one per side).

Step 2: Pull back the trunk side trim to access the taillamp nuts

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to pop out any trunk liner clips near the taillamp area.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with the small flathead screwdriver. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.

Step 3: Remove the outer taillamp assembly

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
  • Hold the lamp with one hand while removing the last nut.
  • From outside, pull the lamp straight back to release the locating pins.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling the 10mm nuts.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket and replace the bulb

  • Twist the correct socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp.
  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out (push-and-pull style).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinsert the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 5: Reinstall the taillamp and trunk trim

  • Line up the lamp pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in.
  • Install the nuts by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with the 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall trunk liner clips using the trim clip removal tool to press them in squarely.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same steps for the other rear taillamp.

āœ… After Repair

  • 🧪 Turn the parking lights ON and confirm both sides glow evenly.
  • 🧪 Press the brake pedal (use a helper or a heavy object carefully) and confirm both brake lights get brighter.
  • 🧪 Turn on hazards and confirm both rear turn signals blink normally (not ā€œfast blinkingā€).
  • 🧪 If you see condensation inside the lamp later, recheck that the bulb socket is fully locked.
