🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Yaris is a simple job. You’ll access the bulbs from inside the cargo area, remove the bulb holder, swap the bulbs, and reinstall everything. Replace both sides at the same time so the light color and brightness match.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use clean gloves or a clean cloth on the new bulbs. Finger oils can shorten bulb life.
  • Do not use excessive force on the lens, tabs, or bulb socket.
  • If the bulb housing is tight, do not pry hard against the painted panel.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hatch for easier access to the rear lamp access covers.
  • Have both replacement bulbs ready before removing the first one.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hatch and find the access panel

  • Open the rear hatch.
  • Look behind the rear interior trim near the taillight area.
  • Use a trim panel tool to gently pop off the access cover.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Reach into the opening and locate the bulb socket at the back of the taillight housing.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise and remove it.
  • If it is stuck, use a flathead screwdriver very gently for extra turning help.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not touch the glass if the bulb has a glass envelope. Use gloves.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Line up the bulb holder with the taillight housing.
  • Push it in and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Torque: Hand-tight only; no published torque spec for the bulb socket.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Follow the same steps on the opposite taillight.
  • Replace both bulbs together so brightness matches.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flush and all clips are seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and check both taillights.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both rear lamps light up.
  • Check turn signals and hazard lights if the same housing shares those bulbs.
  • If one side does not work, recheck bulb seating and socket alignment.
