🔧 Taillight Bulb Replacement - Replacement

This job replaces the rear stop/tail bulbs on both sides of your Sierra. The taillamp housings come off from the outside, so you do not need to remove the bed or trim panels.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool first if the lamps were just on.
  • Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers.
  • Be gentle with the taillamp housing tabs. They can crack if forced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim tool or plastic panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/stop bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • If the rear lamps were on recently, wait a few minutes so the bulbs cool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate for access to the taillamp mounting screws.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws

  • Use a 7mm socket with a ratchet and short extension to remove the two screws holding each taillamp housing.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place.

Step 3: Release the taillamp housing

  • Pull the taillamp housing straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it sticks, use a trim tool to gently work it loose.
  • Do not pry on the lens edge.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the rear bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket.
  • Make sure it seats fully and matches the old bulb style.
  • Handle the bulb by the base.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and housing

  • Insert the socket into the taillamp housing and twist clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Align the housing pins with the body openings and press it straight in.
  • Reinstall the screws with the 7mm socket and tighten to 3 N·m (27 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same process for the opposite taillamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and check both taillights.
  • Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lamps work.
  • Check the turn signals and hazard lights if those bulbs were part of the rear lamp assembly.
  • Make sure the housings sit flush with the body.
