🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the rear bulbs from inside the cargo area and (if equipped) inside the liftgate by opening the small access covers, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb. This avoids removing the entire lamp housing and keeps it beginner-friendly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass on incandescent bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the liftgate securely while working around it.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear bulb(s) (match the bulb you remove) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the lights are switched OFF.
- Open the liftgate and remove anything in the cargo area that blocks the side access panels.
- If you’re not sure which bulb failed, have a helper press the brake / turn signal while you watch from behind.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear bulb you’re replacing
- Use a flashlight to look at the lamp and confirm which section is out (brake/running light, turn signal, reverse, etc.).
- If needed, have a helper operate the brake pedal and turn signal while you watch.
Step 2: Access the outer taillight bulb (left or right side of cargo area)
- Go inside the cargo area on the same side as the bad bulb.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop open the small access cover in the interior trim panel.
- If the cover is tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (go slow to avoid marring the trim). Work from an edge, not the center.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Reach through the access opening and find the correct bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Remove the bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some twist—match what your bulb does).
- Install the new bulb firmly into the socket the same way the old one came out.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and trim cover
- Insert the socket back into the housing and turn clockwise until it locks.
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place by hand.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side (the “both taillight bulbs” part)
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other side cargo-area access cover.
Step 7: If your bulb is in the liftgate (inner lamp), access it
- If the section that’s out is on the liftgate-mounted lamp, open the liftgate.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to open the liftgate lamp access cover (or small service panel, if equipped).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand, swap the bulb, then reinstall like Steps 3–5.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the lights ON and verify: running lights, brake lights, and turn signals work correctly.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it fully in the socket.
- If it’s still out, the issue may be a blown fuse or a bad socket connection (corrosion/loose pins).
