🔧 Malibu - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Malibu, the rear bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk by removing the taillamp assembly. You’ll remove a few fasteners, twist the bulb sockets out, and swap the bulbs on both left and right sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If you just used the lights, let bulbs cool 5 minutes (they get hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillamp as you pull it out to avoid scratching paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/stop light bulb (typically 3157) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (typically 3156) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Tip: Keep bolts/nuts in a small cup.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillamp fasteners

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use a trim panel tool to gently pull back the trunk liner/access flap behind the taillamp you’re working on.
  • You’ll see the taillamp retaining fasteners (nuts/wing nuts depending on what’s installed).

Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
  • Support the lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off.
  • From outside the car, pull the taillamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • Tip: Wiggle gently—don’t pry on painted edges.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out of the taillamp.
  • If you’re replacing “both taillight bulbs,” you’ll usually replace:
  • the tail/stop bulb (brake + running light), and
  • the turn signal bulb (blinker).
  • Tip: If unsure, note which socket was where.

Step 4: Replace the bulb(s)

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Inspect the socket for green/white crusty corrosion; if present, wipe gently with a clean dry cloth.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket(s) and taillamp

  • Insert each socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
  • Line up the taillamp’s alignment pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Use a torque wrench: Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).
  • Reposition the trunk liner/access flap.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite taillamp so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON.
  • Test running lights, brake lights, hazards, and turn signals.
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove that socket and rotate the bulb 180° (some aftermarket bulbs fit tighter one way).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
