🔧 Explorer - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Explorer, the taillight bulbs sit inside each rear lamp assembly (left and right). You’ll remove the lamp housing, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything so the lights seal properly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn all lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Bulbs can be hot—let them cool for 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves or a clean paper towel.
- ⚠️ Pull the lamp straight back—don’t pry on the painted body.

- Taillight bulb (common type: 3157) - Replace in pairs (left + right) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear liftgate to access the taillamp screws.
- Make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the liftgate and locate the taillamp screws
- Open the liftgate and look at the inner edge of the taillamp (the side facing the liftgate opening).
- You’ll see the retaining screws for the lamp housing.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp housing
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the taillamp retaining screws.
- Set the screws aside where they won’t fall or get lost.
- Grip the lamp housing and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
Step 3: Remove the taillight bulb socket
- Behind the housing, find the bulb socket for the taillight function (typically the larger dual-filament bulb for tail/brake).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves (or use a clean paper towel).
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if needed).
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp housing
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock it.
- Line up the housing’s locating pins with the body grommets, then push the housing straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug them evenly: Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 for the opposite taillamp so both bulbs are replaced as a matched pair.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the lights on and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights work.
- Turn on the hazards and confirm both sides flash normally (not fast).
- Check the lamp housings sit flush and don’t wiggle (prevents water leaks).
