🔧 Accord - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the left and right taillight bulbs from inside the trunk by removing a small access cover and swapping the bulb in the socket. This is usually quick and doesn’t require removing the whole taillight assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for 10 minutes; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you must use the brake pedal to test, use a helper or brace the pedal safely.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb (left/right, outer lamp) - Qty: 2
  • Optional: Turn signal bulb (if your “taillight” issue is actually the blinker) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Confirm which function is out: running lights (tail), brake lights (stop), or turn signals.
  • Have a helper ready to press the brake pedal during testing (or back up near a wall to see reflections).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (left side)

  • Use a flashlight to look along the left trunk side trim behind the taillight.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop open/remove the small access cover (or gently release the carpeted flap, depending on how your trunk trim is set up).
  • Trim tool = plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the bulb socket going into the back of the taillight housing (you’ll see wires leading to it).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and steady the housing with your other hand.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket (same orientation as the old one).
  • If it’s a glass bulb, avoid touching the glass; wear nitrile gloves.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the lights ON to check running lights.
  • Have a helper press the brake to verify the brake light.
  • If it still doesn’t work, remove the bulb and reseat it firmly once.

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

  • Repeat Steps 1-4 on the right trunk side using the plastic trim removal tool, flashlight, and nitrile gloves.

Step 6: Refit trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access covers/flaps by pressing them back into place by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use the flathead screwdriver (small) gently to align it, then press to seat.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify all rear lighting functions: tail (parking lights), brake, turn signals, and hazards.
  • If one side is still out, the next checks are the bulb socket condition (corrosion/melt), fuse, or wiring at that lamp.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
