🔧 Tucson - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly repair. You’ll remove the rear lamp housings, swap the bulbs, then test the lights before reinstalling everything.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Make sure the exterior lights are switched off so the bulb sockets are not powered.
- ⚠️ Bulbs can get hot. Let the lamps cool for at least 5-10 minutes if they were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not pull hard on the wiring. The bulb sockets twist out of the lamp housing.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or handle new bulbs by the plastic base. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🔒 Set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the headlight switch to Off.
- 📦 Open the liftgate to access the inner edge of each rear lamp housing.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to fully open the rear liftgate.
- Stand behind your Tucson and look at the inner edge of one taillight assembly.
- You should see the mounting screws that hold the outer rear lamp housing to the body.
Step 2: Remove the Taillight Mounting Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws on the inner edge of the taillight housing.
- Place the screws on a shop towel so they do not roll away.
- Tip: Press firmly to avoid stripping screws.
Step 3: Release the Taillight Housing
- Use both hands to grip the taillight housing.
- Pull the housing straight rearward, away from the vehicle.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool set at the outer edge to gently help release the retaining pins.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches.
- Do not twist the housing sideways because the locating pins can break.
- Tip: Pull straight back, not outward.
Step 4: Locate the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the taillight housing.
- Find the taillight bulb socket. The socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the housing.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves before touching the bulb.
- If your bulb is a push-in style, pull it straight out of the socket by hand.
- If your bulb is a twist-lock style, gently press it in, turn it counterclockwise, then pull it out.
- Use a shop towel if the bulb is slippery or dirty.
- Do not squeeze the glass hard because it can break.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear taillight bulb.
- Install the new bulb into the socket the same way the old one came out.
- For a push-in bulb, press it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- For a twist-lock bulb, insert it, gently press inward, then turn clockwise until it locks.
- Tip: Match the old bulb’s base shape.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing by hand.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flat against the housing seal.
- No torque specification is used for the bulb socket; tighten by hand only.
Step 8: Test the New Bulb Before Reassembly
- Turn the headlight switch to the parking light position.
- Check that the new taillight bulb illuminates.
- Turn the lights back off after confirming the bulb works.
- If it does not light, remove the socket by hand and make sure the bulb is fully seated.
Step 9: Reinstall the Taillight Housing
- Align the taillight housing pins with the body openings.
- Push the housing straight forward by hand until it sits flush with the body.
- Make sure the weather seal is not pinched.
Step 10: Reinstall the Mounting Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the taillight mounting screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly by hand.
- Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs) if using a low-range torque screwdriver.
- Do not overtighten because the lamp housing plastic can crack.
Step 11: Repeat on the Other Side
- Move to the opposite taillight.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver, trim removal tool set, nitrile gloves, and shop towel to repeat Steps 2 through 10.
- Replace the second taillight bulb so both sides have matching brightness.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the parking lights and confirm both taillights work.
- ✅ Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights still work normally.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify the rear turn signals were not disturbed.
- ✅ Close the liftgate and check that both lamp housings sit flush with the body.
- ✅ If a bulb warning remains, switch the lights off and on again after confirming both bulbs are seated correctly.
