🔧 F-150 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your F-150, the taillight bulbs are serviced from the outside by removing each taillamp housing, then twisting the bulb sockets out of the back. Replacing both sides is straightforward and usually takes more time to handle the housings carefully than the bulbs themselves.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF, remove key, and let bulbs cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—bulbs can be hot and glass can break.
- ⚠️ Support the taillamp so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool

- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Lower the tailgate to access the taillamp fasteners.
- Lay a towel on the bumper corner to protect paint while you handle the lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access and locate the taillamp fasteners
- Lower the tailgate by hand.
- Look at the inside edge of the taillamp (near the tailgate opening) for the two mounting screws.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to remove the two screws.
- If your screws are Phillips-head, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver instead.
- Set screws aside where they won’t get lost.
Step 3: Pull the taillamp housing straight back
- Grip the housing with both hands and pull straight rearward.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release. Pull straight back, not sideways.
- Don’t yank by the wiring.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- From the back of the taillamp, find the bulb socket (the plastic twist-lock holder that the bulb plugs into).
- Use your gloved hand to twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
- Repeat for any other bulb you’re replacing (typically stop/turn/tail and reverse).
Step 5: Replace the bulb(s)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tools).
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a small dab of dielectric grease with a gloved finger to the socket seal if it looks dry. Keep grease off the bulb glass.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket(s) into the taillamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing.
- Twist the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it locks.
Step 7: Reinstall the taillamp housing
- Line up the locating pins on the taillamp with the body grommets.
- Push the housing straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the two screws using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (or Phillips #2 screwdriver if equipped).
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–7 for the other taillamp.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the key to ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
- Make sure both taillamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
