🔧 E-150 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear taillight housing, twist the bulb sockets out, and swap in new bulbs. This fixes dim, out, or intermittent rear lighting and helps keep you legal and safe at night.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first—old bulbs can be hot enough to burn you.
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers (if glass type); skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must disconnect the battery: remove the negative cable first and reinstall it last.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulbs (match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the rear doors so you can access the taillight screws.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which “taillight bulbs” you’re replacing
- Use your work light and look at the rear lens sections.
- If the bulb is for running lights + brake/turn, it’s usually a dual-filament bulb (often labeled on the bulb base).
- Tip: The old bulb number is printed on the base.
Step 2: Remove the taillight housing (one side)
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the taillight to the body.
- Gently pull the taillight housing straight back.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim panel removal tool to gently help it release from the alignment pins.
- Torque: If no torque spec is available, reinstall screws snug by hand—do not overtighten.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Reach behind the housing and find the socket for the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and steady pressure—don’t force the wires.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you’re using it, put a tiny smear of dielectric grease on the socket seal (not on the bulb contacts).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Before bolting the housing back on, test the light:
- Turn on parking lights to check the taillight/running light.
- Press the brake pedal to check the brake light (a helper makes this easier).
- Turn on the hazard lights to check turn signal function.
Step 6: Reinstall the taillight housing
- Align the housing with the body alignment pins and press it into place.
- Install the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque: If no torque spec is available, tighten screws snug by hand—stop when the housing is secure.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2-6 for the other rear taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Verify: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards all work on both sides.
- Check that both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, re-check the socket is fully twisted/locked and the bulb is fully seated.
