🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement
Assumption: Your XSE may have LED rear lamps. If the rear lamp is LED, there is no replaceable taillight bulb and the whole lamp assembly must be replaced. If your car has bulb-type rear lamps, this guide covers both sides.
Rear lamp work is simple once the trunk trim is out of the way. The job is mostly careful access, gentle connector handling, and making sure the new bulbs are seated correctly so the lights work on both sides.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob before starting.
- Let bulbs cool down first; hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
- Do not touch glass bulb surfaces with bare hands. Oil from skin shortens bulb life.
- If your Camry has LED rear lamps, do not try to pry apart the lamp to service LEDs.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove loose cargo.
- Keep the trunk lid fully open so the side trim is easy to reach.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp area
- Open the trunk.
- Use a trim panel tool to gently pull back the trunk side liner near the taillight you are servicing.
- If needed, remove any plastic retainers with the trim panel tool.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb holder or lamp access cover
- On bulb-type lamps, locate the rear bulb holder on the back of the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to twist the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull it out.
- If there is an access cover, remove it first with a flat-blade trim tool.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it in firmly until it seats.
- Use gloves so you do not touch the glass if the bulb is halogen.
Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder
- Line up the bulb holder with the opening in the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to turn it clockwise until snug.
- Do not overtighten it.
Step 5: Test the light
- Turn on the parking lights and press the brake pedal.
- Check both sides to make sure the tail lamps illuminate evenly.
- If one side does not work, recheck bulb seating and socket contact.
Step 6: Reassemble the trunk trim
- Push the trunk liner back into place.
- Reinstall any clips or retainers by hand.
- Make sure the trim sits flat and does not interfere with the trunk seal.
✅ After Repair
- Check tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.
- Confirm both sides match in brightness.
- If the new bulb still does not light, inspect the socket for corrosion or damage.
- If your Camry has LED rear lamps, the fix is a complete lamp assembly replacement, not a bulb swap.
