🔧 Camry - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right rear taillight bulbs by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the trunk, twisting the socket out, and swapping in new bulbs. This restores your running lights (and on many bulbs, the brake light too) so you stay visible and legal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: your Camry uses replaceable tail/brake bulbs (not LED modules).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin/trunk area.
- ⚠️ If any bulbs were recently on, let them cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Hybrid note: this job is 12V lighting only; no high-voltage service is required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Small torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm)
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail/brake light bulbs (typically 7443 / W21/5W) - Qty: 2
- Replacement trunk trim clips - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Set your flashlight so it shines into the trunk-side trim area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (left side)
- Open the trunk and locate the trunk side liner behind the left taillight.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic clips holding the liner.
- Peel the liner back to expose the back of the taillight assembly.
- Tip: pry the clip center first, then remove.
Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket
- Find the socket that corresponds to the tail/brake bulb (usually the larger socket in the main lamp housing).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock.
- Pull the socket straight out.
- If it’s tight, gently wiggle while pulling; don’t yank the wires.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Put on nitrile gloves and install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth before installing.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and quick-test
- Insert the socket back into the housing and turn clockwise to lock.
- Do a quick test before reassembling trim:
- Have a helper turn on the parking lights to confirm the taillight works.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal to confirm the bright brake light works.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right trunk liner.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to remove clips and pull the liner back.
- Twist the socket out, replace the bulb, reinstall, and test the same way.
Step 6: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner on each side.
- Reinstall clips by pushing them in by hand; use the Phillips #2 screwdriver only if your clip style has a screw center.
Step 7: If you removed the lamp assembly (only if needed)
- If access is limited and you removed the lamp nuts, reinstall them using a 10mm socket and small torque wrench.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Tip: snug only; over-tightening can crack plastic.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm left and right taillights illuminate evenly with parking lights ON.
- Confirm both brake lights brighten when the brake pedal is pressed.
- Verify no trunk trim is loose and the trunk closes without pinching wiring.
