🔧 Sonata - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the rear lamp bulb sockets from inside the trunk, remove the old bulbs, and install new ones. Replacing weak or burned bulbs restores visibility and keeps you legal and safe at night.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: You’re replacing the outer taillight bulbs (accessed from trunk).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If lights were recently on, let bulbs cool 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of halogen bulbs with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life); use nitrile gloves or a clean paper towel.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely while working.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo or trunk liner mats.
- Have your new bulbs ready and keep them clean (leave them in packaging until install).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area from inside the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the back side of each outer taillight assembly (left and right corners of trunk).
- Remove the trunk side trim access cover if equipped.
- If the trim is held with push-clips, use a trim clip removal tool to pop the center pin up, then pull the clip out.
- If needed, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently start a stubborn clip. Pry slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Identify the correct bulb socket
- Use the flashlight and look for the round bulb socket(s) going into the back of the lamp.
- There may be multiple sockets (brake, tail/running light, turn signal). Pick the one you’re replacing.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling—do not crush the glass.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If your bulb is a “twist-lock” style, align the tabs and twist to lock (you’ll feel it stop).
- Keep the bulb clean and dry.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing, keeping it straight.
- Twist clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks in place.
- Make sure the socket seal sits flat (a pinched seal can cause moisture inside the lamp).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the other outer taillight in the trunk.
- Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color.
Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk trim/access cover.
- Reinstall push-clips by inserting the outer clip first, then pressing the center pin in flush using your thumb or a trim clip removal tool.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test: parking lights, brake lights (press pedal), and turn signals.
- Walk behind your Sonata and confirm both sides match brightness and function.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it; also check the socket for corrosion or looseness.
- Check the taillight lens over the next few days for fogging (sign of a seal issue).
