🔧 Camry - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the left and right rear taillight bulbs from inside the trunk. This restores your rear running lights (and sometimes brake lights, depending on which bulb you’re changing) so you stay visible and legal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Hybrid note: do not disturb any orange high-voltage cables in the trunk area.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb (match the bulb number from your old bulb) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and use a flashlight so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
  • Decide which bulb you’re replacing (left, right, or both). If unsure, switch the lights ON briefly to confirm which side is out, then switch them OFF again.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (inside the trunk)

  • Open the trunk and locate the carpet/trim panel behind the taillight area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop out any trim clips holding the panel.
  • If a clip is stubborn, carefully help it with a small flathead screwdriver (go slow to avoid breaking it).

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the taillight bulb socket on the back of the taillamp housing.
  • Grip the socket firmly with nitrile gloves and twist it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand using nitrile gloves.
  • Tip: Wiggle gently—don’t yank.
  • Look at the printing on the old bulb (this is the bulb number you should match when buying the replacement).

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket using nitrile gloves.
  • Make sure it seats fully and straight (no wobble).
  • Do not touch the glass portion of the bulb with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the taillamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it stops (snug by hand only).
  • Turn the lights ON to confirm the bulb works (and press the brake pedal to confirm brake light operation if that’s the bulb you replaced).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Move to the other taillight area in the trunk and repeat Steps 1-5.

Step 7: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reposition the trunk liner/carpet.
  • Press the clips back in by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool to line them up if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify: left and right taillights ON with parking lights.
  • Verify: brake lights work when pressing the brake pedal.
  • Verify: no bulb-out warning on the dash (if equipped).
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove it and rotate/reseat it, then recheck the socket is fully turned and locked.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹800-₹2,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹200-₹1,200 (parts only)

You Save: ₹600-₹1,300 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
