🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the left and right taillight bulbs from inside the trunk by removing the small access covers behind each taillight. The bulbs twist out of the taillight housing, so you usually don’t need to remove the whole lamp assembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oils can shorten bulb life and broken glass can cut.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely so it can’t drop on you.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim panel removal tool
- Flathead screwdriver (small)
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Needle-nose pliers
- Clean shop towel

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (tail/running light bulb) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- Rear brake/stop light bulb (if separate from tail bulb) - Qty: 2 Only if your housing uses a separate bulb
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo, floor mat, or trunk organizer.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can clearly see the bulb sockets.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Find the taillight access cover (left side)
- Open the trunk and use a flashlight to look behind the left taillight area.
- Remove the small trunk trim access cover using a trim panel removal tool (or a small flathead screwdriver gently).
- Tip: Pry slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Locate the bulb socket going into the taillight housing.
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand to unlock it.
- If it’s tight, use a clean shop towel for grip (don’t use pliers on the plastic if you can avoid it).
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If the bulb is a “wedge” type, it just pulls/pushes straight (no twisting).
- Tip: Don’t touch the glass; use gloves.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Turn the lights on to test the taillight.
- Press the brake pedal to test the brake light (a helper is best).
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the right taillight access cover and bulb socket.
- Use the same trim panel removal tool and flashlight to remove the cover and swap the bulb.
Step 6: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reinstall both access covers by pressing them back into place by hand.
- If any push-clips came out, reinstall them using needle-nose pliers to line them up, then press them in.
âś… After Repair
- Verify: running lights, brake lights, and hazards all work on both sides.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and reinstall it firmly, then re-test.
- If it still doesn’t work, the bulb socket contacts may be dirty/corroded and need cleaning or replacement.
