🔧 4Runner - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each outer taillight housing, twist out the bulb socket, and swap in new bulbs. This fixes a burned-out light and restores safe visibility for braking/parking lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight as you remove it so it doesn’t drop and crack.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/taillight bulb (7443) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🚪 Open the rear liftgate for access.
- 🧰 A plastic trim removal tool is a pry tool that pops clips without scratching panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight mounting nuts (one side)
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop open the small interior access cover behind the taillight area (left or right cargo-side trim).
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2: Remove the taillight housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two 10mm nuts.
- With both nuts off, hold the taillight and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- Wiggle gently; don’t pry the paint.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the stop/taillight bulb socket on the back of the housing (usually the larger red-lens bulb position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new Rear stop/taillight bulb (7443) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If using dielectric grease, wipe a tiny amount on the socket seal (not the bulb glass) using a clean shop towel. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight
- Insert the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the taillight locating pins and press the housing straight into place.
- Reinstall the two nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
- Snap the interior access cover back in using your hand pressure.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite taillight.
✅ After Repair
- 🔦 Turn the headlights ON and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- 🛑 Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights brighten.
- 🔍 Make sure the housings sit flush and there are no gaps around the lens.
