🔧 Santa Fe - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
You’ll access the rear lamp sockets from inside the cargo area (outer lamps on the body) and, if equipped, from the liftgate trim area (inner lamps on the hatch). The basic job is to remove the access cover, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then test all rear lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Bulb locations can vary by lamp design; match the bulb number printed on the old bulb.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching new bulb glass with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the liftgate fully open so it can’t drop while you work.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension
- Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulbs (match the bulb number you remove) - Qty: 2-4 (depends on which functions are bulbs vs LED)
- Rear turn signal bulbs (match the bulb number you remove) - Qty: 2 (if separate from brake)
- Reverse light bulbs (match the bulb number you remove) - Qty: 2 (if replacing both sides)
- Replacement trim clips (assorted) - Qty: 1 set (optional)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate and remove anything in the rear cargo area that blocks the side access panels.
- Lay a towel down to protect interior plastics and prevent losing screws.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine not required) and switch the headlights ON to check tail/running lights.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal to check brake lights.
- Use the turn signal stalk to check left/right turn signals.
- Shift to Reverse only if safe and the vehicle is secured; otherwise skip reverse test until after replacement.
- Tip: A phone video helps you verify later.
Step 2: Access the outer taillight bulbs (body-side lamps)
- In the cargo area, locate the access door behind each rear corner trim (left and right).
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to pop open the access cover.
- Use a flashlight to find the bulb sockets on the back of the lamp.
- Tip: Plastic trim tools reduce scratches.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly, then rotate it counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t yank the wiring.
- Tip: Turn the socket, not the wires.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (some are twist-lock; if so, rotate slightly then pull).
- Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb and install the new bulb the same way.
- Wear nitrile gloves and avoid touching any glass bulb surface.
- If the new bulb is LED, it may be polarity-sensitive; if it doesn’t light, remove it and flip it 180° (only applies to some LED replacements).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and repeat on the other side
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other side (left/right) so both sides match in brightness and color.
Step 6: If your Santa Fe has bulbs on the liftgate (inner lamps), replace those too
- Look at the lamp sections on the liftgate/hatch. If a section is not LED and has a serviceable bulb, you’ll access it from the inside of the liftgate.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to carefully pop off the small liftgate trim access cover (or remove the inner trim panel if no access door).
- Remove fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver and/or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension.
- Twist the socket out (counterclockwise), replace the bulb, then reinstall the socket (clockwise).
- Reinstall screws/bolts and tighten snugly; if you use a torque wrench on lamp nuts/bolts, use Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs) unless a fastener is clearly larger.
- Tip: Don’t overtighten—lamp housings can crack.
Step 7: Reinstall access covers and trim
- Reinstall the cargo-area access doors by pressing them back into place by hand.
- If you removed liftgate trim, align the clips and press evenly until each clip snaps in.
✅ After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and confirm both tail/running lights work.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights work.
- Test left and right turn signals and hazard lights.
- Confirm reverse lights work (only when safe and legally permitted).
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and reseat it; for LED replacements, flip the bulb orientation.
