🔧 Sequoia - Tail Lamp Bulb Replacement
Your Sequoia can have different bulbs depending on which “taillight” function you mean (tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, reverse). The removal steps and bulb type can change depending on whether the bulb is in the outer body lamp or the liftgate lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot glass can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.

- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Plastic trim tool set
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch for easier access.
- Have someone help confirm which bulb is out (tail/running vs brake vs turn) while you watch the lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight” bulb you’re replacing
- Turn the headlight switch to ON and check which side is out (left/right).
- Press the brake pedal and check if the brake light works.
- Turn on the hazard lights and check if the rear turn signal flashes.
- If you tell me which function is out, I’ll match the exact bulb.
Step 2: Access the outer tail lamp (body-mounted)
- Open the hatch.
- At the inside edge of the outer tail lamp, remove the small trim cover using a plastic trim tool set.
- Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Pull straight back; don’t twist the lamp.
Step 3: Remove and replace the bulb
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Remove the bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some twist—match what you see).
- Install the new bulb using nitrile gloves.
- Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 4: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Reinsert the bulb socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the tail lamp pins and push the lamp straight into place.
- Reinstall the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
- Reinstall the trim cover by pressing it back in by hand.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps for the opposite tail lamp.
âś… After Repair
- Test tail/running lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights.
- Make sure the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, swap the new bulb to the other side to confirm it’s not a socket/wiring issue.
