🔧 Prius - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear taillight (running light) / brake light bulbs on both sides. This is usually done from inside the cargo area by removing small access covers, so you typically don’t need to remove the whole taillight housing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: you mean the outer taillight brake/running bulbs on left + right.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the bulbs cool before touching them (they can be hot).
- 🔌 Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob away from the car so the lights can’t be turned on accidentally.
- 🧼 Don’t touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Extension bar 3"
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail light bulb (7443 / W21/5W type) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the headlight switch OFF and confirm the rear lights are off.
- 🧰 Open the hatch and remove any cargo so you can access the rear side panels.
- 🧼 Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the new bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (left side)
- Open the hatch and use a flashlight to find the small access cover behind the left taillight area.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry open the access cover. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps you pop panels without scratching them.)
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Reach in and find the taillight bulb socket (it’s the twist-lock holder going into the back of the lamp).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock, then pull it straight out.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if it’s stuck).
- Install the new 7443 / W21/5W type bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Tip: Compare old/new bulb bases before installing.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Turn the car to ON and press the brake pedal to confirm the bulb lights brightly, and turn on the parking lights to confirm it lights dimmer.
- Turn the car OFF again when the test is complete.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right rear access cover and use the trim removal tool (plastic) to open it.
- Remove the socket by twisting counterclockwise by hand, replace the bulb, then reinstall and test the same way.
Step 6: If you cannot reach the socket (alternate method: remove taillight assembly)
- Remove the access cover using a trim removal tool (plastic).
- Use a 10mm socket, extension bar 3", and 1/4" ratchet to remove the taillight retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the taillight assembly straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4, then reinstall the housing.
- Reinstall nuts and Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 💡 Verify left and right brake lights work, and both running lights come on with the headlight switch.
- 🔎 Make sure each socket is fully locked (a loose socket can cause water leaks or flickering).
- 🧩 Reinstall all access covers and confirm the cargo trim sits flat.
