🔧 Optima - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Optima, the rear bulbs are serviced from inside the trunk (behind the carpet access doors). You’ll remove the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything—usually without removing the entire taillight.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn the lights off and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- 🧯 Keep the key away from the car so lights don’t turn on while your hands are inside.
- 🧼 Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim tool set
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail bulbs (dual-filament) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can access both trunk side liners.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and find the taillight access doors
- Use a flashlight to locate the carpeted/trim access panel behind each taillight area (left and right sides of the trunk).
- Use a plastic trim tool set to gently pry open the access door/cover (some covers use clips).
Step 2: Identify the correct bulb socket (taillight bulb)
- Look for the socket that corresponds to the “tail/parking light + brake light” function (usually a larger dual-filament bulb socket on the taillamp housing).
- Tip: Turn parking lights on to confirm.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket (most are push-in; if it feels “stuck,” wiggle gently while pulling).
- Install the new rear stop/tail bulb (dual-filament) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and repeat for the other side
- Insert the socket back into the housing.
- Rotate clockwise until it locks in place.
- Repeat Steps 2–5 on the other taillight.
Step 6 (If access is blocked): Loosen trunk trim for better access
- If you can’t reach the socket, use a plastic trim tool set to pop out a few trunk liner clips near the taillight area.
- If your liner uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Fold the liner back slightly, replace the bulb, then reinstall clips/screws.
Step 7 (Rare case): Remove the taillight assembly if the socket won’t come out
- Remove the taillight retaining nuts using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Carefully pull the taillight straight rearward (it’s held by alignment pins).
- After reinstalling nuts: Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔦 Turn on the parking lights and verify both sides glow evenly.
- 🛑 Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights brighten.
- đź’§ Check that the access covers and trunk liner are seated so water and dust stay out.
