🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces both rear taillight bulbs so your Highlander is visible from behind at night and when the parking lights are on. The bulbs are accessed from inside the rear cargo area through the liftgate-side trim panels, so no bumper removal is needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing bulbs to avoid heat and electrical short risk.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves. Skin oil can shorten bulb life, and old bulbs may crack.
- ⚠️ Do not pry hard on interior trim. The plastic clips can break if forced.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for normal taillight bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the rear liftgate fully.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps open trim covers without scratching the panels.
- Use only the correct replacement taillight bulb type matched for your Highlander. Do not force a bulb that does not fit the socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Rear Cargo Area
- Open the liftgate and clear any cargo from the rear corners.
- Use a flashlight to look at the left and right rear interior trim panels near the taillight areas.
- Find the small rectangular access covers in the cargo trim behind each taillight.
Step 2: Remove the Left Access Cover
- Put on safety glasses and clean nitrile gloves.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry open the left-side access cover.
- Set the cover aside on a shop towel so it does not get scratched.
- Use light pressure only.
Step 3: Identify the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Use a flashlight to look inside the opening.
- The taillight bulb socket is the socket for the rear running light. It twists into the back of the lamp housing.
- A socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the taillight assembly and connects it to the wiring.
Step 4: Remove the Left Taillight Bulb Socket
- Grip the bulb socket by hand with your clean nitrile gloves.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Replace the Left Bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Use a shop towel if the bulb is slippery.
- Push the new rear taillight bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Do not touch the glass with bare fingers.
- If touched, wipe clean.
Step 6: Reinstall the Left Socket
- Use the flashlight to line up the socket tabs with the taillight housing slots.
- Insert the socket straight into the housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks firmly.
- No torque spec applies. This is a hand-tight twist-lock socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the Left Access Cover
- Line up the access cover with the opening.
- Press it in by hand until it snaps flush with the cargo trim.
- Use the shop towel to protect the panel if you need to press firmly.
Step 8: Replace the Right Taillight Bulb
- Move to the right rear cargo trim panel.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently open the right-side access cover.
- Use the flashlight to locate the taillight bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear taillight bulb straight into the socket.
- Reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise until it locks.
- Press the access cover back into place by hand.
Step 9: Test Both Taillights
- Turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
- Walk to the rear and confirm both taillights are glowing evenly.
- If one does not light, turn the lights off, remove the socket with your clean nitrile gloves, and make sure the bulb is fully seated.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure both access covers are clipped in securely.
- Check that no tools or old bulbs are left in the cargo area.
- Dispose of old bulbs safely. Wrap them in the new bulb packaging or a shop towel before throwing them away.
- No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
