🔧 Forester - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Forester, the taillight bulbs sit in the rear lamp housings and can be accessed from inside the cargo area. Replacing them restores tail/brake light visibility and keeps you legal and safe at night.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Avoid touching the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/tail light bulb (7443 / W21/5W equivalent) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch and clear enough space to work at both rear corners.
- Confirm the bulb you’re replacing: on most Forester trims, the “taillight bulb” people mean is the stop/tail bulb (it does dim tail light + bright brake light).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify which bulb is out
- Turn the headlight switch to ON and walk behind the vehicle to see which side is out.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper press it, or use a heavy object carefully) to check brake brightness.
- Turn lights back OFF and remove the key.
Step 2: Access the bulb sockets from inside the cargo area
- Open the hatch and go to the inside trim panel behind the taillight area (left or right side).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop open the small access cover (or pull back the carpeted flap, depending on panel style).
- Use a flashlight to identify the bulb socket for the stop/tail lamp.
Step 3: Remove the taillight bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If there’s a retaining screw on the access panel, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- If it’s tight, wiggle—don’t pry the socket.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new 7443 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (optional, helps prevent corrosion).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and close up
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in by hand.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same steps for the other taillight so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
- Replace in pairs for even light output.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights get noticeably brighter.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, recheck that the socket is fully locked and the bulb is seated.
