🔧 Sportage - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear taillamp housing, swap the bulb(s), and reinstall the housing without breaking the plastic alignment pins. This is straightforward, but you need to pull the lamp straight back so you don’t crack the lens or bend the locating studs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Pull the taillamp straight rearward; prying sideways can crack the lens.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (tail/stop) - Replace in pairs (left + right); match the bulb number printed on the old bulb - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🚪 Open the rear liftgate for access to the taillamp fasteners.
- 🔦 Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
- Assumption: stock halogen taillamps (not LED).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillamp fasteners (one side at a time)
- Open the liftgate.
- At the inner edge of the taillamp, locate the retaining fastener(s).
- Remove any visible screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or remove any nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp housing
- Grip the taillamp with both hands.
- Pull the lamp straight backward (toward the rear bumper) to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help start the separation at the seam. A trim tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches and cracks.
- Don’t twist—straight back prevents breakage.
Step 3: Remove the taillight bulb socket
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it out of the housing.
- Use a flashlight to confirm you’ve got the correct socket (tail/stop bulb).
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket (same orientation as the old bulb).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry before installing.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test before reassembly
- Reinstall the socket into the taillamp and lock it by turning clockwise.
- Turn on the parking lights and verify the taillight illuminates.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper if possible) and verify the brake light gets brighter.
Step 6: Reinstall the taillamp housing
- Line up the alignment pins with their holes in the body.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the fastener(s) using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or a 10mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) if your lamp uses 10mm nuts. Snug only—plastic can crack.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the opposite taillamp so both bulbs are replaced as a pair.
âś… After Repair
- âś… Verify: parking lights, brake lights, and hazard flashers all work normally.
- âś… Confirm both taillamps sit flush with the body (no gaps).
- âś… Take a short nighttime drive and re-check brightness and operation.
