🔧 RAV4 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

This procedure covers replacing both rear taillight bulbs in the rear combination lamp housings. On your RAV4, the tail/brake bulb is a removable bulb inside each rear lamp assembly, so you do not need to replace the whole housing if the lens is not damaged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the bulbs cool down before touching the lamp housing.
  • Use care around the rear trim so you do not crack the plastic clips.
  • Disconnecting the battery is not required for this repair.
  • If a bulb is hot, wait before removing it. A hot bulb can burn your fingers.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat blade screwdriver
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate.
  • Make sure the headlight switch is off.
  • Have both replacement bulbs ready before removing the lamp assemblies.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the liftgate and locate the rear side trim access behind each taillight.
  • Use a trim panel tool to gently pry back the small access cover.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the taillight mounting nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the taillight housing nuts.
  • Keep the nuts in a safe place.
  • There are usually two fasteners per side.

Step 3: Remove the taillight housing

  • Pull the taillight housing straight rearward with both hands.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool to help release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the lamp housing. It can crack the guide pins.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the bulb socket on the back of the housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • The bulb socket is the plastic holder the bulb sits in.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb of the same type into the socket.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers if the bulb is glass. Oil can shorten bulb life.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and housing

  • Push the bulb socket back into the housing and twist it clockwise to lock.
  • Align the housing pins with the body openings.
  • Press the lamp assembly straight in until it seats fully.
  • Reinstall the nuts with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the opposite side.
  • Make sure both sides use matching bulbs.

Step 8: Test the lights

  • Turn on the parking lights and press the brake pedal.
  • Check both taillights for proper operation.
  • Confirm both bulbs illuminate evenly.

✅ After Repair

  • Walk behind the vehicle and confirm both taillights work with parking lights and brake lights.
  • Check for a loose housing or gap around each lamp.
  • If one side does not light, recheck the socket lock and bulb fit.
